Beleef de natuur – Onderwaterleven Saba

On 8 June 2026, PostNL released Beleef de natuur – onderwaterleven Saba, a sheet of 10 postage stamps in 10 different designs. The stamps bear the denomination 1 for mail up to 20 grams within the Netherlands. This issue is part of the multi-year Beleef de natuur (Experience Nature) series, dedicated in 2024–2026 to the biodiversity of the Caribbean Netherlands.

Each year, four stamp sheets are released in the series, each containing 10 different stamps depicting plants and animals native to this part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The islands boast an extraordinary biodiversity, with thousands of species of flora and fauna — a richness unparalleled in the European Netherlands.

The 2026 Saba Series

In 2026, PostNL is devoting four consecutive stamp sheets to the biodiversity of the windward island of Saba: birds (released 5 January), butterflies (30 March), underwater life (8 June), and flora (later in the year). The third sheet, Beleef de natuur – onderwaterleven Saba, shines a spotlight on the island's remarkable marine species.

About Saba

Saba — together with Bonaire and Sint Eustatius — is a special municipality of the Netherlands, collectively referred to as the Caribbean Netherlands. Alongside the autonomous countries of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, these islands form the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Saba belongs to the windward islands, a name derived from their position relative to the prevailing northeast trade winds.

Located 30 kilometres northwest of Sint Eustatius and 45 kilometres southwest of Sint Maarten, Saba is a roughly circular island about 4.5 kilometres in diameter, with an area of just 13 square kilometres. Geologically, Saba is a dormant volcano with four lava domes. Its slopes descend steeply to a rocky coastline, and at 870 metres, Mount Scenery is the highest point in the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands. The island has a humid tropical climate and is covered in secondary rainforest.

Saba National Marine Park

North of Saba lies Green Island, a small uninhabited rocky islet. To the south lies the Sababank, a submerged coral reef. The Sababank is part of the Saba National Marine Park, a 1,300-hectare marine reserve encircling the entire island coast to a depth of 60 metres. Designated a national park in 1987 by the then government of the Netherlands Antilles, it is managed by the Saba Conservation Foundation. Thanks to strict regulations for fishermen, divers, and other visitors, the Saba National Marine Park has become a paradise for underwater life. Ecological surveys have recorded more than 150 fish species within the park.

Design and Designers

The stamp sheet Beleef de natuur – onderwaterleven Saba was designed by graphic designer Frank Janse from Gouda. Each of the 10 marine species is portrayed in its natural habitat on its own stamp. The photographs are embedded in a graphic layer of circular motifs that extend onto the sheet margin. In some places, the imagery continues across adjacent stamps and onto the selvage.

Janse enriched the sheet with graphic elements derived from symbols found on old topographical maps — representing landforms, contour lines, vegetation, soil structures, and waterways. A distinctive feature of the design is an additional transparent layer with monochrome images (both white and in colour) of characteristic fauna. These translucent depictions run across the perforations, visually connecting the stamps with one another and with the sheet margin. The following animals are rendered in this way: brain coral (top left), Nassau grouper (top right), sergeant major (centre), great barracuda (bottom left), and long-spined sea urchin (bottom right).

Frank Janse (born in Vlissingen, 1967) graduated as a graphic designer from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in 2001. He specialises in corporate identity, branding, infographics, and communication campaigns. He worked for various advertising and design agencies, including Room for ID's, and ran his own firm Frank Grafisch Ontwerp in Gouda until 2019. That year, together with Leene Communicatie, he founded Leene Visuele Communicatie, focusing on content and information design. Since late 2022, Janse has been Design Director at VormVijf in The Hague, a studio that works for government bodies and organisations including various ministries, the Novex Rotterdamse haven, the Algemene Rekenkamer, the Tweede Kamer, the Nationaal Deltaprogramma, and the Nationaal Glasmuseum.

For PostNL, Janse has previously designed numerous luxury stamp album systems and themed frame stamps. He also created the designs for the Beleef de natuur series from 2018 through 2025, as well as several stamps printed with 24-karat gold, including Snoopy 75 jaar (2025), Regalia van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (2024), and Holland America Line 150 jaar, Meisje met de parel, and Inhuldiging Juliana 1948 (2023).
