PostNL releases a unique collector's item on 27 April 2026: Garfield, the world's most famous lasagne-loving cat, immortalized on a stamp made of genuine 24-carat gold. This limited-edition issue brings together pop culture and philately in a striking gold presentation.
The Garfield Phenomenon
Garfield is a character from the eponymous comic strip created by American cartoonist Jim Davis (born 1945). He is a lazy, overweight orange cat who lives with his owner Jon Arbuckle and the eternally cheerful but dim-witted dog Odie. Garfield is constantly on the hunt for food, with a strong preference for lasagne and a deep disdain for anything healthy. He loves giving loud nightly performances on the fence (much to the neighbours' dismay), sleeps excessively, and takes great pleasure in tormenting Jon and Odie. A running gag is his intense hatred of Mondays.
The strip first appeared in 1978 via a syndicate in several local US newspapers and by 1981 was published in 850 newspapers worldwide. Davis founded Paws Inc. to manage the rights, and at its peak in 2004, the strip ran in 2,600 newspapers with merchandise generating over a billion dollars globally. In the Netherlands, the strip ran in De Telegraaf from November 1980 to January 2021. Garfield has inspired books, films, television specials, video games, and an endless range of merchandise. Davis sold Paws Inc. to Nickelodeon (Paramount Global) in 2019, but still produces the strip with a team of 20 assistants.
Design & Concept
For the gold stamp, a standing portrait of Garfield in a confident pose was chosen — a design deliberately different from the frame stamps and developed exclusively for this gold issue. The design is clean and instantly recognizable, putting the character front and centre. The stamp format, typography, and mandatory mentions such as "Garfield" and "Nickelodeon" were specified, along with the text in speech balloons. The background colours were predetermined from a limited palette set by the rights holder.
The stamp is delivered in a luxury passe-partout folder and includes a certificate of authenticity. It is part of PostNL's prestigious Collect Club series of gold stamps.
