PostNL released the Postzegelvel Garfield on 27 April 2026 — a charming sheet of five kaderpostzegels (frame stamps), each bearing a different, instantly recognizable portrait of the world's most famous lazy cat. This special issue sits alongside PostNL's official annual programme and is printed to a strict fixed layout, making it a distinctive collectible for both stamp enthusiasts and fans of comic art.

Meet Garfield — The Comic Legend

Garfield is the eponymous star of the long-running comic strip created by American cartoonist Jim Davis (born 1945). The strip features an overweight, orange tabby cat who shares his home with his hapless owner Jon Arbuckle and the perpetually cheerful but dim-witted dog Odie. Garfield's world revolves around three great passions: lasagne, sleep, and avoiding Mondays — the last of which has become one of the most enduring running gags in comic strip history.

Jim Davis named his creation after his grandfather, who was himself named after the 20th President of the United States. Davis grew up on a small cattle farm in Indiana alongside some 25 cats, an experience that clearly left its mark. Today, Garfield's rights are managed by Paws Inc., a subsidiary of Nickelodeon — both names appear on the stamp sheet as per licensing requirements.

"Garfield's running gag about hating Mondays has resonated across generations, making him one of the most globally recognized comic strip characters of all time."

Design & Designers

The sheet was designed by Frank Janse (Vlissingen, 1967), a graphic designer who graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in 2001. Janse is a specialist in campaign identities, branding, and infographics. Over his career he has worked at several design agencies, including Room for ID's, and independently as Frank Grafisch Ontwerp in Gouda. In 2019 he co-founded Leene Visuele Communicatie with Leene Communicatie; since early 2026 he has served as design director at Leene Communicatie.

For PostNL, Janse has previously designed numerous luxury storage systems and a wide range of stamps — from the Beleef de natuur (Experience Nature) series (2018–2026) to the Snoopy 75 Years commemorative. On this project he was assisted by his intern Alec Versluis, who is also credited on the stamp sheet.

Certain design elements of kaderpostzegels are fixed by PostNL's template: stamp size, denomination lettering and "Nederland" text, and the sorting hook. Additionally, the licensing terms imposed by Paws Inc. and Nickelodeon dictated the lettering of "Garfield" and "Nickelodeon," as well as the text inside the speech bubbles. Background colours were likewise constrained to a palette of 10 approved options.

Why Collect This Sheet?

With a print run of only 10,000 sheets, the Postzegelvel Garfield is a genuinely limited collectible. It sits at the crossroads of two vibrant collecting communities: thematic philatelists who focus on comic strips and cartoon characters, and kaderpostzegel specialists who build sets of PostNL's fixed-format frame stamp series. The gold ink element — one of five CMYK + gold colours used in printing — gives the sheet an extra visual distinction.

The sheet is also of significant interest to Garfield fans and pop-culture collectors, as it is an officially licensed product with both the Paws Inc. and Nickelodeon imprints, authenticated on the sheet itself.
