PostNL released the Postzegelvel 70 jaar PostEurop on 8 May 2026 — a special sheet of six kaderpostzegels (frame stamps) marking the 70th anniversary of the EUROPA stamp series. This landmark issue joins more than 50 postal operators across Europe in celebrating a philatelic tradition born in 1956 that has become one of the world's most recognised stamp series.

70 Years of EUROPA Stamps — A United Europe in Philately

The EUROPA stamp initiative was launched in 1956 by six founding nations — Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands — to strengthen relations between European countries and promote unity in the years following the Second World War. What began as a modest collaboration has grown into one of philately's most prestigious programmes, with over 50 postal organisations participating annually around a shared theme.

For the 70th anniversary in 2026, PostEurop — the association of European public postal operators — organised an internal design competition to select a common motif for all participating countries. The winning entry came from Posti Ltd, Finland, designed by graphic artist Klaus Welp. The theme "United in…" was chosen to celebrate the shared values of communication, innovation, cooperation, and common heritage that bind the PostEurop members together.

Design & Layout

The Dutch sheet was designed by Sandra Smulders of Vormgoed, Gouda — a graphic designer who previously created PostNL's entry for the PostEurop competition. The sheet presents six identical stamps arranged in a distinctive layout: three stamps in the upper left and three in the lower right, with the bottom row rotated 180 degrees relative to the top. This means the two stamps in the centre adjoin one another, creating a continuous design where two half-zeros form a complete numeral 70.

On the left side of each stamp sits the mandatory square design motif prescribed by PostEurop — a pattern of diagonal bands in varied colours and dot motifs, traversed by an ascending diagonal line bearing seven larger dots. To the right lies space for postal typography, the PostEurop logo, the sorting hook, and the anniversary figure 70, with its zero halved and descending. Behind the number 70, a stylised graphical fireworks display is visible.

On the sheet margin, the number 70 appears large at upper right, with the same figure rotated 180 degrees at lower left — the two stems of the 7s meeting at the centre of the sheet. The numbers 70, the fireworks, and the sheet borders are printed in a special PMS silver colour (877C) with a gradient effect, underscoring the platinum jubilee of PostEurop.

The silver PMS 877C ink — applied to the numbers 70, fireworks motifs, and sheet borders — gives the issue a distinctive platinum-jubilee lustre. The rotated stamp layout and the continuous "70" formed across adjoining stamps make this sheet a particularly engaging piece of graphic design.
